Firstly, be aware that you are not alone! The majority of people in the western world are basically over weight to different degrees. This is caused by labour saving devices and the lowest amount of manual work than ever in our history. This is evolution and progress. We just need to get used to it and deal with the fall out from the lack of exercise. Perhaps, ‘fall out’ wasn’t the best choice of words.
However, if you don’t have the discipline or money for regular trips to the gym and like me… find gym training so tedious it makes you want to eat the saddle, thus defeating the object of the exercise (excuse the pun).
Question: What’s more boring than exercise?
Answer: More exercise!
Here’s an example of the kind of conversations we’ve had in my household that sums up the average families approach to exercise.
Wife: I need an exercise bike to get back in shape.
Me: Like the real bike in the garage that we bought because you would get fit with it.
Wife: Well it’s difficult to get out and inconvenient.
Me: I know it’s difficult to move as I have lost more weight moving it every year to get the Christmas tree out than you have riding it.
Me: What about the cross trainer in the other room?
Wife: I don’t get time to use it!
Me: You lose more weight dusting it than using it darling!
Our families both originate from London’s East End so to be fair most of our conversations are like this. But you get the gist! Anyway it just went down hill from there. So if you have these kinds of conversations, well you have my sympathy. The cross trainer was sold on eBay as was all the other exercise equipment we bought. I refuse to spend money on such things anymore.
I have found the best way to keep reasonably fit is to buy a house with only one bathroom on the top floor. It’s worked for me; I have found going up and down stairs has improved my fitness levels no end. The great thing is, the more you drink the more exercise you get if you get my drift and it’s free.
The problem is most of us need a coach or a reason to motivate us, such as a wedding, holiday or some major event where we want to look our best. The problem with this is we just relax straight after the event or don’t quite make it anyway because we haven’t had any coaching.
Celebrities stay looking great not because they have the time to exercise but because they have dieticians and lifestyle coaches and fitness trainers motivating them. The love of your life saying ‘you’re looking a bit cuddly porky!’ doesn’t have the same long term effect. In fact it just makes you want to comfort eat.
Most of us aren’t aware of portion control and the right kinds of food to eat. For example there are some foods that actually reduce the fat in your arteries. I have personal experience of a bad lifestyle. My father was a great example of what not to do! He ate fatty foods, smoked and drank beer like it was his last. Consequently he had several strokes and died bit by bit instead of the blaze of glory he always talked about when drunk. The key to weight loss is a healthy life and coaching to get you there. You can eat as much as you like as long as it’s the right things.
